How much is my item worth?
Batemans are happy to view and value large items or quantities of items at your
home. This is a free service - please contact the office to arrange a time. For smaller
items, we offer a free verbal valuation service for any item brought to our saleroom
during office hours. You can also email photos of any items you would like valuing
to our email address, or telephone us, although it is sometimes difficult for us to
give accurate valuations based on photos or descriptions alone. If you require formal,
written valuations for Insurance or Probate purposes, please contact the office for
a specific quote.
Is
my item suitable for sale at auction?
Soft Furnishings: Batemans cannot accept upholstered items such as sofas, armchairs
and mattresses that contain foam unless they bear labels stating that the filling
complies with the 1988 Fire Safety Regulations. Even if items do comply, we rarely
accept these items unless they are new or in extremely good condition. Other Items:
Batemans retain the right to refuse any item that they deem unsuitable for sale. This
often includes modern furniture, especially melamine dining and bedroom furniture,
kitchen items etc. If in doubt, please call the office to check or arrange a viewing.
I want to enter my item into an auction. What do I do?
Either bring smaller items yourself into the office any day between 10am and 5pm
Monday to Friday, or phone to arrange delivery of larger items to the saleroom if
you are delivering them yourself. This will usually be restricted to three or four
days on the week of the sale.
If you would like Batemans to collect the items for you, please contact the office
to arrange a suitable time. Please note that there is a minimum charge of £35 plus
VAT for collection of items, although individual quotes can be given for whole house
clearances. Items for collection must be easily accessible by Batemans porters. The
last day for entering items into a sale is the Friday prior to sale week - this is
so that items can be accurately researched and catalogued.
What
will it cost me? Lotting fees and Buyer's commission.
A charge of £2 per sale is payable for every individual lot entered. This is payable
whether an item sells or not. If an item sells, a seller's premium at the rate of
15% of the hammer price of each lot (together with any Value Added Tax chargeable
thereon) is also payable by the seller to Batemans. This will be deducted from your
after sale statement.
Will my item be catalogued? All Batemans sales are fully
catalogued. Fine Art, Antiques & Collectables sales are also catalogued online and
available to a vast number of potential buyers - many from outside the UK. Where appropriate,
Batemans will take digital photographs to illustrate these online catalogues. All
our sales are also well advertised in the local press and in many national specialist
trade publications to ensure the largest possible number of interested, relevant people
see your items.
What about reserves?
If you do not wish to sell an item below a certain price, you can set a reserve price
on the item. Batemans will be happy to suggest if a reserve would be appropriate on
your items. All goods are automatically offered for sale WITHOUT RESERVE unless specifically
agreed in writing with Batemans before the start of the sale. If set, the reserve
will only apply to the first sale in which the item is entered.
When is settlement after the sale?
After the sale, Batemans will post a statement to the seller informing whether lots
were sold or unsold. Net sale proceeds of less than £20.00 sterling are to be collected
in cash by the seller from Batemans office, at the saleroom address during office
hours. On the settlement date - at least ten days after the sale (and up to 35 days
after the completion of the sale), where net sale proceeds are in excess of £20.00
sterling a cheque will be printed and posted to the seller, at the sellers risk.
What happens to unsold Lots?
For items unsold in the Fine Art, Antiques & Collectables sales the reserve
price will automatically be dropped by 20% or the nearest lower bid for the next sale
(even if this is a General Household sale), unless specifically agreed to the contrary
in writing with Batemans. If you do not wish to drop the reserve for a second sale,
the seller can collect the item(s) at any time before it is lotted up in the next
sale. If items are unsold after two sales, the seller must contact Batemans to arrange
collection of these items and pay the lotting fees applicable. Batemans are rarely
able to dispose of items that are unsold. If the seller fails to make specific arrangements
for collection or disposal of the lot, Batemans may charge storage fees of £1 per
lot per day until collected by the seller.
Risk of loss or damage.
The seller authorises Batemans to assume, at the seller's sole expense, the risk
of loss or damage to the property from the time of Batemans receipt of such property
until risk of loss or damage to the property passes on to the buyer as set forth in
condition (4) (b) (fall of hammer). (See full seller's conditions of sale.) Insurance
at 1% of reserve can be arranged on request, minimum premium £1.
Agreement.
Each seller, by entering items for sale with Batemans acknowledges his or her acceptance
of Batemans full conditions of sale, and the terms of any Notices and other conditions
in the sale catalogue.
