The end of the wooden shaft is flared to prevent the assegai being pulled out of the hand during the blade's withdrawal from an opponent's body. The second item is a Zulu hunting Assagai with a wire binding, from early to mid 20th Century. The weapon has an unusually small blade and was especially used for hunting small game.

A rare and important Zulu 'executioners' knobkerrie with a large head measuring 35cm in circumference, the shaft of which is wire-bound decoration and has a good glossy patina. This knobkerrie, and other associated items, were originally part of a collection owned by the well known Zulu Wars, author and historian living in Natal and allegedly belonged to the Zulu headman Mzumeni Mchunu. Forsyth, Curator of the Post Medieval Museum of London, this cast-iron cannon barrel is 'an unusual and rare play thing of the Georgian era'.
