In contemporary Hogarth type frame. Provenance: the vendor being a direct descendant of Reynolds, this drawing has never been before been offered for sale. It is not listed in any catalogue of his works but Reynolds is known to have made over 2000 portraits throughout his life. Furthermore, Reynolds is known to have produced works illustrating and relating to William Shield's musical composition 'Omai' namely a drawing titled 'Omai of the friendly isles' (now in the National Library of Australia) so it is highly likely that the two were acquainted and that Reynolds should have drawn Shield's likeness.
