Military Medal: A Military General Service Medal for Peninsula Camaign awarded to Matthew Abbott 52nd Foot (private), with clasps for Vimiera, Fuentes D'Onor, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, and Toulouse, with a photgopy of census record for the same. Provenance accompanying medal: Pri Matthew Abbot 52nd (1786-1860's) Born Sulgrave, Northamptonshire and served in the Peninsula in Capt James Paylers company and at Waterloo in Capt Brownriggs company (Payler having retired). Discharged from the service 1824 aged 38 and resumed his job as a 'frame work knitter' in Leicester, an occupation he continued into his 70's. In 1861, aged 76, he is described in the Census as a 'chelsea pensioner' and widower living as a lodger in Leicester.
