In pencil on the mount note reads From The Coll. of Gainsborough DuPont (the artist's nephew) see back of drawing. From the Coll. of the Late Arthur Kay.' ****Provenance: this drawing was sold as lot 30 in Christies sale of 23rd May 1930, entitled 'Drawings by T Gainsborough RA and other English Painters - The property of Arthur Kay esquire' and was catalogued by those auctioneers as by 'T. Gainsborough: Portrait of greenwood auctioneer seated in armchair, black and white chalk on blue paper 15 1/2 in by 9 1/2 in. From the collection of Sir Herbert Jerningham.' Exhibitions: This drawing was included in the Gainsborough Memorial Exhibition at Ipswich in 1929. Related: It is the opinion of Gainsborough scholar Anthony Mould that this is most likely to be a work by Gainsborough's nephew DuPont, (who inherited the majority of Gainsborough's posessions upon the artists death), although there is some difference of opinion on the artist of this drawing and it is certainly possible that this sketch may have been partly drawn or started by Thomas Gainsborough RA, and then may have been added to or overdrawn by Gainsborough DuPont. There are marked similarities between the pose of this gentleman to those of sitters in drawings by both THomas Gainsborough and Gainsborough Dupont. Batemans wishes to thank Anthony Mould and Agnews Fine Art Dealers for their opinions regarding this work.
